The Epitome Of Small-Town
And Country Living

Four hundred years of European heritage began when Robert Lane, governor of the first English colony at Roanoke Island, explored the interior of "the Goodliest Land," and stepped ashore upon what is now Plymouth, NC, in 1584.

About 1680, people were beginning to settle the area that is now Washington County. At that time this area was named Moratucke, a name originating from the Indian tribe that once lived here. Originally the Roanoke River was called the Moratucke River.

Plymouth was established in 1787 and began as a private enterprise. An area of one hundred acres was set aside and divided into streets and lots. Being on the Roanoke and near the Albemarle Sound, Plymouth's prime importance was as a port. During the early 1800s Plymouth was one of 6 main ports in North Carolina and ranked 9th in population among towns.

At the beginning of the Civil War, Union tactics called for blockading southern ports therefore Plymouth was blockaded. Union troops moved in and occupied Plymouth for a time before the Battle of Plymouth. Its strategic location led to heavy fighting. When the troops were gone and the war was over, tradition tells of only 11 structures left standing. Some of these, each with its unique story, still stand today.

Plymouth is an active, fun place to live with festivals, parades, races, tournaments, plays and re-enactments highlighting the calendar. Local events include the Peanut Festival in Roper, Davenport Heritage Day in Creswell.

Historic attractions include the new Roanoke River Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, the Port o' Plymouth Museum, Ram Albemarle Replica, Somerset Place, History Plymouth Walking Tour, Plymouth Lighthouse and Maritime Museum and more.

Laced with waterways, Washington County offers visitors the cozy seclusion of Conaby and Kendrick's creeks, the open waters of Albemarle Sound, the winding Roanoke and Scuppernong rivers plus 2 natural lakes: the Pungo and Phelps.

For the fastest among us, 5 East Coast Drag Boat Association Races are held annually on the waterfront in downtown Plymouth. State-maintained ramps and parking offer convenience on all major waterways.
