In 1787, Josiah Collins established Somerset Place, one of North Carolina’s best preserved antebellum plantations and mansion.
    
The plantation surrounded Lake Phelps, and Collins and his partners brought slaves to dig a 6-mile long canal to drain the lake and turn its bottom into rich farmland.

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is adjacent to Lake Phelps. This plant and animal sanctuary contains more than 110,000 acres. It is an excellent place to view wildlife, especially swans, ducks, geese and other waterfowl cruising the Atlantic Flyway.
